Day one, 28. December 2011

After a thorough planning and many discussions, a lot of preparation and shopping, checking cars, formalities and talking to people the tour starts. Planned route: Awash National Park- Semara-Aftera, Salt mines, - Denakil Desert - Erta Ale (Denakil Desert) - Dalol, Sulphuric springs, Salt Lake, Salt Miners, Camel Caravans - Mountain Region, Mek'elle and via Maychew, Woldiya, Dessie, Kombolcha, Debre Sina, Debre Birhan back to Addis Ababa. Starting from 28. Dec.11 finishing 06.Jan.2012. Danakil Depression ... about -131m below sea level. www.danakil depression or www.afartriangle

Nach gründlicher Planung, nach vielen Diskussionen, Vorbereitungen, Einkäufen und Abklären der Formalitäten wie Gesprächen mit allen möglichen Menschen, die schon in der Gegend waren, beginnt unsere Tour. Die geplante Route: von Addis Abeba zum Awash National Park, weiter nach Semara, dann Aftera (Salzminen), durch die Denakil-Wüste zum Erta Ale, anschließend Richtung Norden nach Dalol zum Salzsee und den Sulfurquellen, sowie um die Kamelkarawanen mit dem Salz zu sehen, später über die Bergregion weiter in nordwestlicher Richtung nach Mekelle, und dann der Straße nach Süden folgend, über Maychew, Weldiya, Dessie, Kombolcha, Debre Sina, Debre Birhan ... zurück nach Addis Abeba. Voraussichtliche Ankunft dort am 6.Januar 2012.

So hat alles angefangen:

Start, 28.Dec.2012/ Wednesday. Mittwoch, 10:40 EAT (East African Time)

As cars we had one rented four wheel with experienced driver, and Franziska's four wheel, a Toyota ... Solomes first comment, when see saw the car: "do you think it is going to make it?" I can tell you already, it had its difficulties. And Addimasu - Tours, we can't recommend them. Don't keep to the contractual agreements. And if reminded all the flaws and mistakes are either "misunderstandings" or pushed to somebody else's responsibility.

On the Compound, the Toyota, actually a quite reliable car and spacy. Unser gemieter Toyota, eigentlich ein recht zuverlässiger Wagen und ... geräumig;-)

Wir hattten einen Geländewagen mit erfahrenem Fahrer gemietet. Das zweite Fahrzeug für unsere Tour war Franziskas Toyota, ein Geländewagen auch, aber anderes Modell. Solomes erster Kommentar, als sie den schon etwas betagten Toyota sah:" meinst Du DER schafft das? "Weibliche Intuition in Ehren, das Auto hatte einige Schwierigkeiten. Und der Tourveranstalter und Autoverleiher (wir hatten, wie gesagt die Tour selbst geplant) "ADDIMASUTOURS" kann man absolut nicht empfehlen. Vertragliche Vereinbarungen werden nicht eingehalten. Und, wenn darauf angesprochen, wird alles auf den Fahrer oderoderoder geschoben. Addimasutours:meiden.

Die erste Station: Franziskas Auto war in der Werkstatt, wo noch ein Teil eingebaut wurde und wir hatten schon die ersten Diskussionen mit unserem Fahrer.

They way out of Addis, via Kality ... a two lane road is becoming a - at least - six lanes road. Der Weg raus aus Addis: eine zweispurige Strße wird kurzerhand zur - mindestens - sechsspurigen Ausfallstraße erklärt.

Wenn man aus Addis Abeba herausmöchte hat man zwar verschiedene Möglichkeiten, doch wenn man in eine bestimmte Richtung möchte, nämlich nach Osten, dann ... gibt es keine Alternative, man muss durch Kality. Jeder der dort schon einmal war, weiß, was ich meine! Allen anderen kann man es einfach nicht beschreiben: das muss man erlebt haben. Hier werden zwei- oder vierspurige Straßen zu sechs- oder achtspurigen Autobahnen. Obwohl es zwei Straßen gibt, die durch Kality führen ist es immer ein tolles Chaos, was die Fahrtdauer zunächst uneinschätzbar macht. Und, das Stadtgebiet von Addis ist in den letzten Jahren unglaublich gewachsen, das heißt, es dauert immer länger, um durch diesen Moloch zu kommen.

If you want to get out of Addis Ababa you may have different possibilities but if you want to go East you're bound to use the way through Kality. Always an adventure and you can't predict the time it takes. Everone who has been there already knows what this implies, all the others have to experience it. Not describable! Here two - or four-lane roads become six- or eight-lane roads. Although there are actually two roads through Kality it is always a turmoil, chaos what makes the duration unguessable. And, because the city has grown in its' outskirts like everywhere else, this means it takes longer and longer each time to get out of this juggernaut.

Vulkan-"Pickel" am Straßenrand, Richtung Metahra. A volcanic-pimple, on the road to Metahara.

This vulcano-crater is in an area with many more vulcanos. In the morning you can see the steam evaporating. You cross this area about 40 km after Nazret, believe me you will be gobsmacked.

Dieser Vulkankrater ist nur einer von vielen in diesem Gebiet. Man passiert es auf der Straße etwa 40 km nach Adama. Frühmorgens kann man den Dampf entweichen sehen. Atemberaubende Landschaften.

Deep ruts, results of incredible heat, heavy load trucks. Nice experience to drive them with a "normal" car;-) Tiefe Spurillen, das Resultat von unglaublicher Hitze und Schwerlastverkehr ... tolle Erfahrung, wenn man hier mit einem normalen Auto fährt;-)

Day two, 29. December 2011

Some of us started this day not with a coffee or tea and breakfast but with a tour through the Illal Sala Plains for some animal life and game in the early morning. Breakfast later to come. The Plains are at the southern part of the Awash National Park, http://www.selamta.net/awash_national_park.htm, where the Awash Lodge is situated as well www.awashfallslodge.com.

Einige von uns begannen diesen Tag anstatt mit einem Frühstück mit einer Tour durch die Illal Sala Ebene, um im frühen Morgenlicht einige Wildtiere sehen zu können. Die Ebene ist im südlichen Teil des Awash National Parks, wo auch die Awash Falls Lodge zu finden ist.

Nach der Tour ging es wieder zurück zur Lodge, um den ersten Staub der Tour abzuwaschen und lecker zu frühstücken. und natürlich zu diskutieren, was wir gesehen hatten. After the tour we went back to the lodge to wash off the first dust of the tour and to have a nice breakfast. Of course we discussed what we had seen and, sitting in the balcony of the restaurant we enjoyed the wonderful scenery and tried to spot the crocodiles on the stones and the river bank.

From the restaurant you have got a wonderful view over the Awash Gorge and you can watch the Crocodiles basking in the sun.
Vom Restaurant aus hat man einen wundervollen Blick auf die Awash Schlucht, den Fluss und man kann Krokodile beim Sonnenbaden beobachten.

I had lost a bet situating the buffet de gare to Mieso, so we had to go to Awash to check the Buffet D Auache, a restaurant run by an old greece lady. Wonderful, reclusive place, good food;-)
Da ich eine Wette verloren und behauptet hatte, das Buffet de la Gare sei in Mieso fuhren wir erst noch nach Awash, um das Restaurant zu besuchen. Wunderschön, etwas abgelegen, toller Garten, leckeres Essen. Das ganze wird seit Jahrzehnten von einer älteren griechischen Dame betrieben. Empfehlenswert.

These are the rooms where Haile Selassie stayed, when he had to stop on his way to the east. in diesem Raum übernachtete Haile Selassie, wenn er auf seinem weg in Äthiopiens Osten war.
